In many classrooms, laptops and tablets have replaced notebooks. Typing is faster than writing by hand, and digital notes are easy to search and share. It might seem that handwriting has become an old-fashioned skill with little value.

Some research, however, suggests that writing by hand may help us learn. Because people cannot write as fast as a lecturer speaks, they must listen, choose the key ideas, and put them in their own words. Typists, in contrast, tend to copy speech word for word without thinking deeply about it.

In several studies, students who took notes by hand performed as well as or better than those who typed when answering questions that required understanding, not just memory. Writing by hand also seems to help young children learn to recognize letters, perhaps because forming each letter involves both movement and vision.

This does not mean schools should abandon technology. Digital tools are useful for editing, collaborating, and organizing large amounts of information. The lesson is rather that the method should match the goal. For deep learning, the slower process of writing by hand may sometimes be an advantage rather than a weakness.

正解:2. It forces people to select key ideas and use their own words.

根拠:第2段落「choose the key ideas, and put them in their own words」

Q2 How did students who took notes by hand perform in several studies?

  1. They did worse on memory questions.
  2. They did not finish the tests.
  3. They did as well as or better on questions requiring understanding.
  4. They could not read their own notes.

正解:3. They did as well as or better on questions requiring understanding.

根拠:第3段落「performed as well as or better than those who typed」

Q3 What is the author's conclusion?

  1. The method should be chosen according to the goal.
  2. Schools should ban laptops.
  3. Handwriting is always better than typing.
  4. Digital tools have no advantages.

正解:1. The method should be chosen according to the goal.

根拠:第4段落「the method should match the goal」
