Not long ago, a television drama in Korean or Spanish had little chance of becoming a worldwide hit. Today, streaming platforms release shows in dozens of languages at once, and series from South Korea, Spain, and Japan regularly appear near the top of global viewing charts.

Translation is central to this success. Streaming services invest heavily in both subtitles and dubbing, and in many countries a large share of viewers now choose dubbed versions, which allow them to follow the story while looking at their phones or doing other things. Subtitling, meanwhile, remains popular among viewers who want to hear the actors' original voices.

Neither method is simple. A good subtitle must be short enough to read in a few seconds, so translators often condense dialogue and must find equivalents for jokes and cultural references. Dubbing requires matching the translated lines to the actors' lip movements, a painstaking task that also depends on the skill of voice actors.

AI is beginning to change the process. New tools can generate draft translations and even recreate an actor's voice in another language. This could make content available in more languages at a lower cost, but voice actors and translators worry about their jobs and about the loss of human nuance.
