Training and running advanced AI models requires enormous computing power, and computing power requires electricity. Data centers packed with specialized chips consume vast amounts of energy, both to perform calculations and to keep the equipment cool. As demand for AI services has surged, technology companies have been racing to build new facilities around the world.

This expansion is putting pressure on power grids. In some regions, utilities have warned that they cannot connect new data centers as quickly as developers would like, and forecasts of electricity demand have been revised sharply upward after years of little growth. The International Energy Agency has projected that electricity use by data centers could more than double by 2030.

Tech firms say they are committed to clean energy, and several have signed long-term contracts for solar, wind, and even nuclear power. Engineers are also designing more efficient chips and cooling systems. Still, critics note that efficiency gains can be offset by rising usage, a pattern economists call the rebound effect: when something becomes cheaper to use, people tend to use more of it.

The debate matters for investors as well. Utilities, grid equipment makers, and energy producers have attracted new attention as indirect beneficiaries of the AI boom, while questions about power supply may determine where, and how fast, the industry can grow.

Q1 Why do data centers use so much energy?

  1. They are usually located in very cold regions.
  2. They need power both for computation and for cooling.
  3. They store electricity for nearby cities.
  4. They use old and inefficient chips.

2. They need power both for computation and for cooling.

both to perform calculations and to keep the equipment cool が根拠。both A and B

根拠:第1段落「both to perform calculations and to keep the equipment cool」

Q2 What is the 'rebound effect'?

  1. A sudden fall in electricity prices.
  2. Increased use that cancels out savings from greater efficiency.
  3. The return of companies to fossil fuels.
  4. A recovery in the stock prices of tech firms.

正解:2. Increased use that cancels out savings from greater efficiency.

efficiency gains can be offset by rising usage(効率向上が利用増で相殺される)。

根拠:第3段落「efficiency gains can be offset by rising usage」

Q3 Why might investors pay attention to utilities?

  1. They may benefit indirectly from the growth of AI.
  2. They are developing their own AI chatbots.
  3. They are required to buy AI companies.
  4. Their profits are guaranteed by the government.

正解:1. They may benefit indirectly from the growth of AI.

indirect beneficiaries of the AI boom(AIブームの間接的な受益者)の言い換え。

根拠:第4段落「indirect beneficiaries of the AI boom」
