A placebo is a treatment with no active ingredient, such as a sugar pill. Surprisingly, patients who take placebos often report feeling better. This phenomenon, known as the placebo effect, has puzzled doctors for decades and plays an important role in medical research.

When scientists test a new drug, they usually divide volunteers into two groups. One group receives the real drug, while the other receives a placebo that looks identical. Neither the patients nor, in many cases, the doctors know who is receiving which. Only if the drug performs better than the placebo can researchers conclude that it truly works.

The placebo effect appears strongest for symptoms that are influenced by the mind, such as pain, fatigue, and anxiety. Expectations seem to matter: in some studies, more expensive-looking pills or injections produced stronger effects than cheap-looking ones. However, placebos cannot shrink tumors or cure infections.

The placebo effect reminds us that healing is not only a matter of chemistry. A patient's beliefs, and even the way a doctor communicates, can influence how people feel. Some researchers are now exploring whether this knowledge can be used ethically to improve care without deceiving patients.
