Imagine you keep one million yen in a savings account that pays almost no interest. After a year, you still have one million yen. It seems that nothing has changed. But if prices have risen by three percent during that year, your money can now buy about three percent less than before.

This is the quiet danger of inflation. It does not reduce the number in your bank account, so many people do not notice it. Economists distinguish between the nominal value of money, the number you see, and its real value, what it can actually buy. When inflation is higher than the interest rate you receive, the real value of your savings falls.

For many years, Japan experienced very low inflation or even falling prices, so keeping money in the bank felt safe. Recently, however, prices have been rising more noticeably, and people have begun to pay closer attention to how their savings are affected.

There is no perfect way to protect money from inflation, but diversification can help. Some people invest part of their savings in assets such as stocks, which have historically grown faster than inflation over long periods, although their prices can fall sharply in the short term. The key is to understand that keeping money in cash is not completely free of risk.
