Progress in artificial intelligence is conventionally charted through benchmarks: standardized collections of test questions on which competing systems are scored and ranked. Such yardsticks have undeniably galvanized the field, furnishing researchers with common goals and an unambiguous means of adjudicating rival claims. Yet their very success has exposed an insidious vulnerability.
The economist Charles Goodhart famously observed that a statistical regularity tends to collapse once pressure is placed upon it for purposes of control; the principle is now commonly paraphrased as 'when a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.' In AI, the phenomenon manifests in several guises. Test questions may inadvertently leak into the enormous datasets on which models are trained, so that a high score reflects memorization rather than reasoning. Developers may also, consciously or not, tailor their systems to the idiosyncrasies of a particular benchmark.
The consequence is that benchmarks saturate with dispiriting rapidity. Tests designed to challenge systems for years are sometimes mastered within months, prompting a perpetual scramble to devise harder ones. More troubling still, impressive scores can engender complacency, lulling users into overestimating a system's competence in settings that bear little resemblance to the test.
Remedies are emerging. Some evaluators keep their questions private, rotate them frequently, or assess models on tasks drawn from real-world use rather than curated exams. None of these measures is a panacea, but together they reflect a salutary shift in emphasis: from asking how well a system performs on a test to asking how reliably it behaves when the stakes are genuine.
Q1 What does the author suggest about benchmarks in the first paragraph?
- They have been largely irrelevant to progress in AI.
- They have driven progress but also have a hidden weakness.
- They are too difficult for most AI systems.
- They were designed mainly to rank universities.

正解:2. They have driven progress but also have a hidden weakness.
Yet their very success has exposed an insidious vulnerability(その成功自体が目立たない弱点を露呈させた)と転じています。
根拠:第1段落「Yet their very success has exposed an insidious vulnerability」
Q2 How might a model achieve a high score without genuine reasoning?
- By refusing to answer difficult questions.
- Test questions may have been included in its training data.
- By using a smaller dataset than its rivals.
- Evaluators may have made the test easier on purpose.

正解:2. Test questions may have been included in its training data.
Test questions may inadvertently leak into the enormous datasets ... so that a high score reflects memorization rather than reasoning。inadvertently(うっかり・意図せず)は1級頻出。
根拠:第2段落「Test questions may inadvertently leak into the enormous datasets」
Q3 What danger of high benchmark scores is mentioned?
- Users may overestimate how capable a system is in real situations.
- Developers may lose interest in building new systems.
- High scores make systems more expensive to use.
- Benchmarks become impossible to update.

正解:1. Users may overestimate how capable a system is in real situations.
engender complacency(慢心を生む)、lulling users into overestimating a system's competence が根拠。lull A into doing は「Aを安心させて~させる」。
根拠:第3段落「lulling users into overestimating a system's competence」
Q4 What does the author mean by a 'salutary shift in emphasis'?
- A move toward publishing all test questions openly.
- A beneficial move toward evaluating dependable behavior in real use.
- A decision to stop measuring AI performance altogether.
- A change from private companies to public universities.

正解:2. A beneficial move toward evaluating dependable behavior in real use.
how reliably it behaves when the stakes are genuine(本当に重大な場面でどれだけ確実に振る舞うか)への転換です。1は keep their questions private と逆。
根拠:第4段落「how reliably it behaves when the stakes are genuine」
