Blockchains were first associated with cryptocurrencies, but many financial institutions are now interested in a different use: tokenization. The idea is to represent ownership of a real-world asset, such as a government bond, a building, or a share in a fund, as a digital token that can be recorded and transferred on a blockchain.
Advocates argue that this could make markets faster and cheaper. Today, settling a securities trade can take a day or more and involves several intermediaries. With tokens, ownership could change hands almost instantly, around the clock, and assets could be divided into small units, allowing more people to invest.
Several large asset managers have already launched tokenized funds that invest in short-term government debt, and some banks are testing tokenized deposits for payments between companies. Still, most activity remains at an experimental stage.
Major obstacles remain. Legal systems must recognize a token as proof of ownership, and different blockchains need to work together smoothly. Moreover, speed can cut both ways: the same technology that allows instant settlement could also allow panic to spread more quickly during a crisis.
Q1 What is tokenization?
- Creating new cryptocurrencies to replace the dollar.
- Recording ownership of real assets as digital tokens on a blockchain.
- Selling government bonds only to banks.
- Printing paper certificates for digital assets.
2. Recording ownership of real assets as digital tokens on a blockchain.
represent ownership of a real-world asset ... as a digital token
根拠:第1段落「represent ownership of a real-world asset」
Q2 Which benefit do advocates claim?
- Trades could be settled almost immediately at any time.
- Intermediaries would earn higher fees.
- Assets could no longer be divided.
- Prices would never fall.
1. Trades could be settled almost immediately at any time.
almost instantly, around the clock(ほぼ瞬時に、24時間いつでも)→ almost immediately at any time。
根拠:第2段落「ownership could change hands almost instantly, around the clock」
Q3 What does 'speed can cut both ways' mean here?
- Fast settlement has benefits but could also accelerate a crisis.
- Blockchains are sometimes fast and sometimes slow.
- Tokens can be sent in two directions at once.
- Speed is important only for large banks.

正解:1. Fast settlement has benefits but could also accelerate a crisis.
根拠:第4段落「could also allow panic to spread more quickly during a crisis」
