Clothes have never been cheaper. Many brands now release new styles every few weeks, encouraging shoppers to buy more and wear each item fewer times. This business model, often called fast fashion, has made trendy clothing affordable for millions of people.

However, the environmental cost is high. Producing cotton requires large amounts of water, and synthetic fabrics such as polyester are made from oil. When these fabrics are washed, they can shed tiny plastic fibers that flow into rivers and oceans. Most unwanted clothes are not recycled; they end up in landfills or are burned.

There are social costs as well. To keep prices low, some factories pay workers very little and ignore basic safety standards. Consumers rarely see these conditions, because production often takes place far from where the clothes are sold.

Some shoppers are responding by buying secondhand clothes, repairing what they own, or choosing fewer, higher-quality items. A few brands now offer repair services or take back used garments. Critics warn, however, that such efforts will have limited impact unless the industry changes its basic model of producing ever more clothes at ever lower prices.
