When a company earns more cash than it needs, it has several choices. It can invest in new projects, pay down debt, distribute dividends, or buy back its own shares. In recent years, buybacks have become one of the most popular ways for large companies to return money to shareholders.

A buyback reduces the number of shares in circulation, so each remaining share represents a slightly larger slice of the company's profits. This tends to raise earnings per share and can support the stock price. Buybacks are also flexible: unlike dividends, which investors expect to continue, a company can scale them back in difficult years without alarming the market.

Critics, however, see a darker side. Executives whose pay is linked to the share price may favor buybacks over long-term investment in research, equipment, or workers. Some companies have even borrowed money to fund buybacks, leaving them more vulnerable when the economy slows.

In Japan, buybacks have surged as the Tokyo Stock Exchange has pressed listed companies to use their capital more efficiently. For investors, the key question is not whether a company buys back shares, but whether it does so at sensible prices after funding the investments it needs to grow.
