When people think about exercise, they often imagine running marathons or lifting heavy weights at a gym. As a result, many decide that exercise is not for them. Yet one of the most effective forms of physical activity requires no special equipment at all: walking.

Studies have linked regular walking with a lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some forms of depression. Walking also strengthens bones and muscles, which becomes increasingly important as people age. Importantly, the benefits appear even at a moderate pace, so walking does not need to be exhausting to be useful.

Walking may help the mind as well as the body. Many writers and scientists have said that they think more clearly while walking, and some research suggests that a short walk can improve creativity. A walk outdoors, especially in green spaces, may also reduce stress.

The main challenge is making walking part of daily life. Getting off the train one stop early, taking the stairs, or holding walking meetings are simple ways to add steps. For people who find traditional exercise intimidating, walking offers an easy and inexpensive place to start.
