Fine art has long been a playground for the very rich. A single painting by a famous artist can sell at auction for tens of millions of dollars, and wealthy collectors have often treated their collections as a store of value, alongside real estate and gold.
In recent years, new platforms have tried to open this market to ordinary investors through fractional ownership. A company buys a well-known work, divides ownership into thousands of shares, and sells them online, sometimes for as little as a few hundred dollars each. When the artwork is eventually sold, shareholders receive a portion of any profit.
The idea is appealing, but art has unusual characteristics as an asset. It pays no dividends or interest, so returns depend entirely on the price rising. Buying and selling involves high costs, including auction fees, insurance, and storage. Above all, the art market is illiquid: a painting may take months or years to sell, and its value is ultimately determined by the tastes of a small group of buyers.
Financial advisers therefore suggest that art should, at most, make up a small part of a diversified portfolio. The best reason to buy art, many collectors say, is still the simplest one: because you love looking at it.
