Delivery riders, ride-share drivers, and freelance designers are all part of what is often called the gig economy. Instead of working for one employer, they take on short jobs, or gigs, usually found through apps and websites. For many people, this kind of work offers something traditional jobs do not: the freedom to choose when and how much to work.

This flexibility can be valuable. Students can earn money between classes, parents can work around their children's schedules, and people between jobs can earn an income quickly. Some workers enjoy being their own boss and would not want to return to an office.

However, the gig economy has hidden costs. Gig workers are often treated as independent contractors rather than employees, which means they may not receive paid holidays, sick pay, or contributions to pensions. Their income can also change sharply from week to week, making it hard to plan for the future.

Governments in several countries are debating how to protect gig workers without destroying the flexibility they value. Some have introduced rules requiring minimum payments or basic insurance. Finding the right balance is difficult, but as more people earn their living this way, the question is becoming impossible to ignore.
